Move

Hilarious! Absolutely hilarious! In support of my one word for this year – MOVE – I decided to attend my first ever Zumba class. I mean . . . what could be more fun than exercising with music and dance.

Wait for it!

Thank goodness there was no video! The Instructor asked if there was anyone new. I was the lone hand. So, for my benefit, she reviewed the basics of Zumba – steps, arms, legs, hips, and body in 5 seconds or less. By this time, I’m sure she is thinking, “Oh, my . . . she (meaning me) is what you call a ‘Zumba nightmare’.”

Class begins. She says, “Just watch me.” She goes right, I go left. She says, “Arms up; mine go down.” She holds up four fingers and steps forward. I go backward. She claps; I clap. Yea! I got something right!

Just as I’m fortified with a small amount of confidence, the first routine ends and we begin another without pause. I check the clock . . .OMG! 15 minutes has passed.

Talk about increased heart rate. Mine is beating out of my body. My knees are feeling the impact of Moving – front, back, left, right, around, REPEAT! My mouth is as dry as can be, and, of course, I failed to consider the benefit of bringing a bottle of water with me. I recognize my mantra has become, “Breathe, Just Breathe.”

Oh, it’s break time – Yea! 30 seconds. Are you kidding? By now, we are 30 minutes into the workout. “Move . . . just keep moving!”

Miraculously, I survive the hour. I’ve not fallen, I’ve kept moving, and I’ve not totally disgraced myself. Yet, I can hardly stand because my knees are in pain. And, who knew your elbows could hurt. Really? Elbows! I slowly walk home actually celebrating the fact that I’ve made it. Perhaps not with finesse and grace, but I’ve made it.

Will I come back next week? You bet!
After all my One Word is MOVE!
