Coaching – Does it Matter? Yes, it Does!
Earlier this month, we offered five key points about what coaching is. Now, let’s look toward why coaching matters. From a research-based perspective and a personal opinion, coaching is an effective growth and support process for businesses and individuals. Personally, I don’t know how people stay motivated and productive in dealing with the challenges of today without the support of a coach, whether internal or external to the organization.
At Results Coaching Global, our mission is to support leaders in being more confident, competent and courageous in their work and life. Honestly, this is why coaching works. It supports everyone involved in
- Establishing and creating actions toward their desired goals
- Becoming more skilled, self-assured and brave in dealing effectively with work and life challenges
- Finding greater joy and satisfaction in work and life
- Communicating more effectively
- Building and strengthening relationships
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) provides ongoing research on the impact of coaching, with their latest report coming out in 2020. ICF estimated that in 2019, there were 71,000 coach practitioners, an increase of 33% from the 2015 estimates. And, when looking at the number of managers/leaders using coaching skills, that estimate was at 46%, almost half the amount from 2015. This is good news for RCG since we are committed to supporting leaders in being more coach-like, meaning being less directive and more inclusive in listening, asking, and working together to accomplish elevated results.
In the 2015 report, ICF stated that coaching increases productivity, elevates a sense of positivity in the workplace and provides a higher return on investment, with an overall satisfaction level of 99%. One can only surmise that the same level of satisfaction rings true for this year and years to come. The key ingredients, as we see them are
- belief that people are whole, capable, and resourceful and want to do well with their work and in their lives
- skilled coaches who support the desired growth of individuals and teams
- high-level leadership who make coaching a priority with time, funds and attention
Still wondering? Let’s hear what leaders currently being coached have to say about coaching.
“Being coached is a form of self-care. Taking the time to stop, identify barriers in my day to day work, and reflecting long enough to determine next steps and actions. It helps me move forward with an intentional plan. I feel empowered and prepared. The long-term impact has been the ability to approach challenges with curiosity vs. the feeling of already being defeated.”
Dr. Maricela Helm
Executive Director of Student Services
Wylie ISD, TX
“My coach is instrumental to my success as a high school principal. She is supportive, reassuring, and kindly forceful so that I do the work during our conversations while she remains action oriented so I feel efficient at the end. I leave my coaching conversations with plans and resources and truly feel like I have gained an hour during that time.”
Logan Mallonee
Principal, Truckee High School
Tahoe Truckee Unified School District, CA
“Being coached feels like my guilty pleasure on the job! It is time for me to step away to think about ideas, concerns, and barriers that are important to me and that relate to my well-being and work. Having a coach helps me advance towards my goals and to be accountable; with that combination, I get more done. Why? It’s incredible how I am so motivated after my sessions! Gotta have my coaching time!”
Dr. Kim Richardson
Organizational Development
Hampton City Schools, VA
“I love my coaching sessions. As a campus leader, having a safe and supportive place to reflect on my leadership and to work through any current issues or long-term projects has been invaluable. With my coach, I know that I have set aside time to meet with someone who is going to help me consider the best ways to move forward to achieve my goals. For me, coaching has been so helpful to be able to work through some tough challenges. This process has given me confidence in my decision-making and held me accountable to do some of the more difficult work, whether that be tough conversations or leading campus improvement.”
Alicia Harris
Principal, Bertram Elementary
Burnet Consolidated ISD, TX
“Working with my coach over the years has been incredibly valuable. Each session brings more clarity, and I am always more prepared, confident, and focused for my next steps. It is the overall support over time to reflect as a professional and as a person, however, that has exceeded my expectations of what a coach can provide.”
Sara Colborn, PCC
Principal, Truckee Elementary School
Tahoe Truckee Unified School District, CA
“Working with my coach has helped me reframe things in a positive way. Being coached helps me reconnect with my why and core beliefs.”
Vanessa Thomas Jones
Superintendent
