Emotional Intelligence: The Key to Outstanding Leadership

Emotional Intelligence is a primary differentiator between good leadership and outstanding leadership. Trying times highlight this difference as leaders are called upon to bring their very best selves to each interaction and decision. As life conditions change or create new life and work challenges, individuals who are able to flex with the changes are the ones who will lead others most effectively. The leader’s embodiment of emotional intelligence frequently makes the difference in creating and sustaining high-functioning teams, collaborative environments, and cultures of trust.

The Bar-On EQ-i model of Emotional Intelligence emphasizes 5 major components that make up emotional and social functioning, well-being, and performance. These are:

  • Self-Perception
  • Self-Expression
  • Interpersonal
  • Decision Making
  • Stress Management

There is good news! Skills of emotional intelligence can be learned. With TARP (Time, Attention, Repetition, and Positive Feedback) emotional intelligence can be improved, no matter your current level of understanding and use of EQ.

Which area do you already consider an area of strength for you?

Which area is one that has been more challenging in current times? Which area resonates as one you would like to explore further?
