Here are some thoughts that came to my mind in reflecting on the importance of listening to another person, regardless of their age and stage in life.

“I promise to listen to you.
I am interested in you and what you have to say.
I promise to stop any judgements that attempt to enter my mind as you speak.
I will seek to hear you in both your words and your emotions.
And I will give you space to say more before I begin to speak.
I will not interrupt you.
When I do speak, I will respond in a respectful way that shows that I’ve been listening to you.
My comments and questions will encourage you to trust the space between us so that you feel heard and complete before our conversation ends.”
