“One Word” Revisited

One Word that will change your lifePrior to COVID (2019) which rocked our world, I wrote an article about a powerful concept called One Word. This is some of what I wrote at that time:

What if One Word could change our life? Authors, Jon Gordon, Dan Britton, and Jimmy Page propose in their book, One Word – that will change your life, that it can. The three steps they recommend are:

  1. Prepare Your Heart: Look In
  2. Discover Your Word: Look Up
  3. Live Your Word: Look Out

It seems that 2023 is a great time to take a second look at this concept to test how and in what ways this idea is still working in my life.

When I first read the book, I did so in one sitting. Practicing in the best way I knew how; I opened my heart to the first step – creating a space for my One Word to show up. While somewhat skeptical, the concept stayed with me as I began to listen to what was showing up for me. Novel idea – RIGHT? Listen! Yet this listening was different. It was not an external process; it was an internal one. And, guess what? My word did emerge. Amazingly, it was the second step – Discover Your Word. It came to me; I did not force it.

My One Word became MOVE!

It was time to move my body, my mind, and literally move from my condo to a new home next door to my grandchildren . . . move in every possible way!

Okay, that was four years ago. So, what, if anything has happened as evidence of the transformative power of what is promised when one focuses on One Word? What demonstrates that I am living my One Word? This month, I will share two stories that I believe are concrete and specific ways that Move has been actualized in my life.

“Moving” Our Company

Perhaps one of the biggest “moves” in my life came in January of 2022 when Results Coaching Global became a subsidiary of Solution Tree, Inc. It has long been our dream that our work live on. And, let’s face it – I’m not a youngster any longer! Ha! While I love coaching, the travel has become the challenge. Mechanical difficulties, delayed flights, boarding flights and then deplaning for some unknown reason, and most of all spending nights in the airport on a cot are not a part of my dream job. Granted these are facets of “moving”, yet, they are not the ones I prefer.

Back to the importance of the move to a larger, international company. This move did not come easily as there are mixed emotions when one cares deeply about her work. There is the excitement of the potential for reaching a larger audience with what we believe is key to the success of any leader today. That, of course, is being a Coach Leader. On the other hand, there are so many uncertainties – What will this mean for us? What about our Coaching School? What will be our role? What will having a manager mean to us? How will this change the way we do things?

In the first year, our new owners said, “Business as usual.” so, things continued as before with little, if any, major changes. Now, we are into year 2 and things are beginning to change. We are “moving” in new and different ways – price increases, role changes, and transition of the work to others. WOW! It’s a BIG MOVE! It requires flexibility, a new mindset about who makes the decisions, and most importantly, how do we grow others so that we can move into true retirement knowing that there is capacity to carry on? The good news is we are continuing to thrive, forever passionate about the message of being coach leaders, and still loving being with you – our treasured colleagues!

Karen…perfect timing to see your post on “one word”!!!! I remember when we spent some time looking for that one word for each of us…then, the TX and KS coaches. Mine became “JOY”….and it has served me SOOOO well!!!! I’m sure it was the continuing practice you led to “put it into a phrase that can become our life’s mission” Mine became, To live my life finding strength and inspiration in nature, hold it within me as a mirror, and DO those things that bring me JOY!
Living in the Branchwood Village Senior Living Cooperative in Lawrence with Randy, has provided me opportunities every day to look for JOY….in my family and in my community.
Keep MOVING….and may it bring YOU, JOY!!!!!
